چکیده

We review recent progress on the application of long-range surface plasmon-polariton waveguide biosensors for disease detection. The biosensors are constructed from metal stripe waveguides cladded in Cytop with etched microfluidic channels to expose the stripe surface to the sensing fluid. The waveguides support long-range surface plasmons in integrated optics geometries when excited in an end-fire manner. Application of straight waveguide biosensors to the detection of leukemia, dengue infection and urinary tract infection in complex fluids such as blood serum, blood plasma and urine is reviewed.

Laboratory experiments for exploring the surface plasmon resonance

The surface plasmon wave is a surface wave confined at the interface between a dielectric and a metal. The excitation of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) on a gold thin film is discussed within the Kretschmann configuration, where the coupling with the excitation light is achieved by means of a prism in total reflection. The electromagnetic principles are detailed and a simple experimental s...

Effect of Fe3O4 Magnetic Nanoparticle Concentration on the Signal of Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) Spectroscopy

Effect of Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticle concentration on the signal of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectra has been successfully observed. The Fe3O4 nanoparticles with a particle size of about 10.5 ± 0.2 nm were used as active materials to increase the SPR response. X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern showed that Fe3O4 nanoparticles have a high degree of crystallinity with spinel structure. The S...

Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensors for Disease Diagnosis

Most of the optical sensors based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) are imitated from two main configurations. Firstly, in the KretschmannRaether configuration, a thin metal layer is sandwiched between the prism and the air. Otherwise, the Otto configuration, there is a gap between the metal and the prism. However, the Kretschmann-Raether geometry is more conventional scheme to generate the su...

Effect of photodiode angular response on surface plasmon resonance measurements in the Kretschmann-Raether configuration.

We study the effect of photodiode angular response on the measurement of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in metallic thin films using the Kretschmann-Raether configuration. The photodiode signal depends not only on the light intensity but also on the incidence angle. This implies that the photodiode sensitivity changes along the SPR curve. Consequently, the measured SPR spectrum is distorted, t...

Hybrid nanoparticle and thin film SPR biosensor with a high figure of merit

Due to their extreme sensitivity to refractive index changes, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors have long been established as extremely valuable tools for biosensing. In the past few years researchers have begun investigating various other metallic nanostructures as candidates for localized SPR (LSPR) sensing. Although LSPR is not nearly as sensitive to bulk refractive index changes as st...
